Anyone who knows me or has read my blog, knows that I love trying new restaurants. Traveling to New Mexico gave me the opportunity to research and try many more new places! With a high rating on food apps, Habaneros Fresh Mexican Food was on the top of my list in Las Cruces. (And it was near our AirBnB!) Looking at Las Cruces, NM on the map, you’ll find that it is only about an hour away from the United States and Mexican border and less than an hour away from Hatch, NM, which is famous for its chiles. I should have known that I was in for a real treat.
We opted for the Special of the Day which came with your choice of chips and salsa or Welcome Soup. Since it IS the Home of the Welcome Soup (according to their sign), I quickly chose the Welcome Soup. The special of the day was Chile Verde with meat (pork), a cheese enchilada with your choice of sauce (I chose red chili sauce), rice and beans. All of this, a drink and dessert was only $9.99!
The Welcome Soup turned out to be a delicious pinto bean soup with noodles which must have had jalapeño juice in it because it had a hint of pepper taste without the chunks of the pepper. The Chili Verde was so tender and delicious but I must admit that the green chilies were a little too hot for me. By the end of my meal, I was scraping the green sauce off to enjoy the pork. If I’m honest, the apple dessert didn’t meet my expectations after all of the handmade dinner, but that certainly doesn’t sway my opinion of Habaneros at all. It is definitely deserving of it’s high food app rating.
So, if you find yourself near the US-Mexican border near Las Cruces, give Habaneros a try, I think you’ll be glad you did. And tell them Travel and Table recommended them!
