I have said before how much I enjoy writing restaurant reviews, mainly because I USE restaurant reviews! Take Orland’s New Mexican Cafe for instance. I’m in Taos, a town I’ve never visited before, and I know nothing about the local food scene. Enter… my handy dandy food app. When I don’t know anything about the local food scene, I trust the multitude of other people who have ventured this path before me. I relied on those reviews to steer me to Orlando’s. And they definitely steered me in the right direction.
The restaurant color scheme in New Mexico is all about bright colors and Orland’s was no exception. Driving up, you can’t miss the brightly colored umbrellas that line the patio area, creating shade and a festive atmosphere for outdoor dining. Taking this cue, we chose to sit on the patio on that beautiful summer day. The staff was quick to greet us and give us a few tips on choosing our lunch orders. (Yes, I know a food app can help with that too, but I like to engage the waitstaff to get their particular favorite dishes.) I took the waiter’s advice and ordered the Grilled Shrimp and Chili Relleno Combo, served with beans and posole (similar to hominy). My college friend, Mary Kay, ventured out on her own and neither of us had any complaints!
Orlando’s also offered Frozen Avocado Pie for dessert and I was too full to order a slice but I talked my waiter into just bringing me just a bite. Maybe I was too full, but I really didn’t find it to be that great. It wasn’t very sweet and didn’t have a strong flavor. Although the lunch was EXCELLENT, for once, I’m glad that I passed on dessert.
So if you find yourself in Taos, NM, trust me and others who write reviews in the food apps, and go to Orland’s New Mexican Cafe. I think you’ll be glad you did.
